Alcoholic drinking is a habit of people in my local community to celebrate what they have achieved, succeeded in their life, work, or special events such as wedding party, open house, birthday party, baby’s one-year birth, anniversary of the dead. It is also the time people sit down together to share joys, confidence, thoughts about their personal life, experiences in work after long absence due to hard working, tough livelihood. People should have moments of rest to drink to forget difficulties, hardship, tiredness in their daily work. However, drinking should be moderate, then it may be healthy for man’s body. Excessive drinking is quite opposite to the previous, not only leading to the damage of material but the spiritual influence. Why is that?
The habit of drinking has been grown as people’s long-standing pastime in Vietnam. It is considered as a social practice such as year-end toast, pay-raise celebration among colleagues in a company. They usually take place in evening, lasting until the mid night. They drink too much to be conscious to go home. As a result, they get a traffic accident on the way home. Some lose their life, others suffer severe injury, becoming the disable, causing the damage of material. The spiritual impact is their wives become widows, their children don’t have enough care of the family. It may considered as a burden of society.
In my local community, people often hold a drinking among neighbors at weekend. They drink from morning to night. During the party, they sing, shout, and tell jokes. At the beginning, it is funny, joyful. As long run, excessive drinking makes them out of control, leading quarrels, even fights due to silly reasons. Apart from that, they ignore the responsibility of a parent that take care of their children, help children’s home work, play with children, accompanying them on the route of education leading to the future.
Experts believe the reason some people become confrontational when drunk is due to the way alcohol affects the brain.
How alcohol can make us aggressive
"Alcohol reduces our ability to think straight," says Professor McMurran, a psychologist at the University of Nottingham. "It narrows our focus of attention and gives us tunnel vision.
"If someone provokes us while we're drunk, we don't take other factors into account, such as the consequences of rising to the bait. This can lead to violent reactions from people who would usually shrug things off."
Alcohol causes chemical changes in the brain which can initially make you feel relaxed, which can be one of the reasons we enjoy drinking. But, according to Professor McMurran, anxiety actually protects us by telling us to avoid or escape certain situations. "When we're drunk, this warning system doesn't work and this can put us in dangerous or confrontational situations."
The way we process information is affected when we've been drinking too. We're more likely to misinterpret other people's behaviour and misread social cues. This could be the reason why so many drunken fights start over little more than a 'dirty look'.

Another phenomenon of alcoholic drinking is the juvenilization of drinkers. The number of young people at age of 15 in Vietnam that join a party full of beer, alcoholic drinking has considerably increased for years. The danger does not stop at this point. After too much drinking, they lose their control of behavior, they commit to raping whoever girls, women they meet after drinking. Many young men have to imprison due to a moment of losing control of themselves, affecting their future, being a root of social evils.
In a family, the image of a drunk parent has put much bad impact on children’s behavior. It embeds in their mind day after day. Some parents ask their children to drink when they have a party at home. They don’t realize this practice gradually makes their children addicted. How can children pursue the path of education to become a mixed citizen in future when they get drinking addicted.
I would like to take an example of my next-door family. They include a ten-year married couple with a nice son and a chubby little girl. They work hard to earn money to feed the family. Since the husband makes acquainted with a drinking group, he thinks about drinking with his friends all day long. The children have often witnessed quarrels, fights between their parents. The family ends up in a divorce.

the damage of material and human being. Source: WWW.car-accident.com |
Another story demonstrates the consequence of excessive drinking. After a workday, a husband joined a drinking with his colleagues to celebrate their salary increase. It lasted four hours, the husband was drunk and on the way home, he couldn't control his driving and had a car accident, he lost his life. In socially speaking, the wife has now worked to feed her children, a financial burden on her shoulders. Now, she is alone on the route to bring up her children.
I live in such a community. I really have a concern about the bad side of my community. It is my children have grown up this setting. The bad image of drunkards, fighting after a drinking has put less or much influence upon our children. I myself deny joining the drinking with them that causes the unfriendliness. Sometimes, I try to drink with them to break down gaps in our relations. However, they don’t let me leave in the middle of the course. In healthy speaking, excessive drinking leads the addiction. The alcoholic addiction causes the disease, unhappiness in the family, reduces the capacity of work that may affect the livelihood, future of children. In one word, man can’t avoid the damage of material and spirit when he indulges into excessive drinking. |
According to Vietnam Plus Newspaper, http://en.vietnamplus.vn/alcohol-major-cause-of-traffic-accidents/98715.vnp, as many as 10,000 cases violated alcoholic regulations in August of this year. Alcohol was the cause of 40 percentage of traffic accident. In fact, the rate is higher as alcohol leads to many violations of traffic safety rules.
The rate of bad impact on people's life due to excessive alcoholic drinking in Vietnam hasn't ever reduced. I think people can't incur such a situation for ever with losses in material and spiritual life. It is time to make a revolution "transforming the society" that would create a healthy life in ethnics, security, medication. The excessive alcoholic drinking should be eradicated. This addiction is not easy to give in a few days. It needs the assistance of the community, family members, relatives, friends who join hands to help the addicted abstain from alcohol.
The discourse communities in this project are related to readers and stakeholders.

The research materials have to meet the readability and understand-ability of these communities. With above discourse communities, my research materials could be experts' analyses on the harm of drinking that has influenced on human body, articles of online newspapers that consolidate my points of view. In term of stakeholders, my evidence should be suitable to the legislation.
