![]() In Vietnam, overseas education has attracted many Vietnamese students’ attention and this number has grown dramatically that ranks Vietnam number one of the sending countries to the US in Southeast Asia in 2016. Why don't students select domestic education institutions as their destination of higher study instead pursuing their path of overseas education with lots of expense, far from their family. In 2011-2012, there were only 106,104 Vietnamese students that went for overseas study, according to Vietnam Ministry of Training and Education (MoET). To put this into perspective, it occupied 5% of domestic postsecondary enrolment. 90% of them were self-financed studies. The number of overseas education students ceaselessly increased that Vietnam’s education investment fell in US $1-1.6 billion, according to Vietnam Ministry of Finance, 10-fold increase compared to a decade ago. In the US alone, Vietnam ranks number one of sending countries in Southeast Asia with Thailand, a distant second, followed by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Why do Vietnamese students select overseas educational institutions as a destination of study instead of domestic educational colleges, universities with affordable tuition fees. A host of reasons explains this question. First of all, poor quality education in middle and high schools, colleges and universities trains a student to become a worker without firsthand experience. Next, the Vietnamese respect learning that is top priority of spending in a family they want to invest in their children’s future. They work hard and save money for their whole life for this goal only. Then, Vietnam’s middle class has increased dramatically and become more affluent than before since Vietnam’s economy has grown up for years that speeds up overseas studies, even students in middle schools can access to education institutions in foreign countries with the state-of-arts technology as the law of Vietnam’s Government is all young people at age of 18 have to join military draft, thus, going for overseas study earlier 18 years old, children will save time of military service. Additionally, the current life in Vietnam is really a concern of many people. It is not an ideal place to live that there is no safety in food, a top threat to people’s health, for instance, agri-food imported from China are not strictly controlled in terms of quality due to local authorities’ prevalent bribery. This is the dissatisfaction of most people against the existing government when it does not have any seriously legal approaches against this practice. Another problem is there is no security in a society that causes people’s anxiety about their personal life where there are theft, robbery, killing of gangsters, traffic accidents that deprive of numerous people’s life. There is also a concern about environment. Vietnam is a place of unfriendly environment that includes littering, weak awareness on protecting green environment, air-pollution due to repeatedly traffic congestion before the powerlessness of the administration. Last but not least, with just-mentioned worries, parents want their children want to study overseas not only earn an internationally acclaimed degree that enable them to land a job that they dream of but also wish them to immigrate in the country where their children spend years to pursue their study, according to anecdotal information. In fact, this is a dramatic story of Vietnamese students. It is not easy to immigrate in a country that is a widespread matter the government of western countries and the US Administration have tried to prevent this trend. After graduating at a university, if student’s profession is among industries the country needs to employ, he or she can prolong their stay there to work. They can obtain the status of immigration if their capacity is so outstanding that rarely is replaced by another. That leads to a legal but untrue marriage with a view that international students can achieve a status of immigration, their end of life. As a marriage of convenience, students have to deal with their partners terms of illegal transactions that lead to problems later on in terms of money. In conclusion, the increase of overseas education in Vietnam does not described the academic training in Vietnam but also features a trend in Vietnam’s society. In reality, the middle class does not want their children to immigrate in developed countries but also they themselves are seeking a way to depart their homeland where they are satisfied with their current life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Work cited http://monitor.icef.com/2013/04/why-vietnam-a-market-snapshot/, Dr. Mark A.
